About WaterAid
WaterAid’s vision is of a world where everyone has access to safe water and effective sanitation.
WaterAid is an international non-governmental organisation dedicated exclusively to the provision of safe domestic water, sanitation and hygiene education to the world’s poorest people. These most basic services are essential to life; without them vulnerable communities would be trapped in the stranglehold of disease and poverty. They work by helping local organisations set up low cost, sustainable projects using appropriate technology that can be managed by the community itself.
They also seek to influence the policies of other key organisations, such as governments, to secure and protect the right of poor people to safe, affordable water and sanitation services. They are independent and rely heavily on voluntary support. Water Aid is committed to addressing the vital need for safe water and sanitation head on. They aim to increase their impact both directly on the ground through their partner organisations, and indirectly by influencing others and promoting best practice in the field and in their offices.
They aim above all to be honest, accountable, effective, innovative and flexible. As a learning organisation, they are constantly evolving. An emphasis on research, analysis, evaluation and dissemination is vital to their future.
They work in both rural and urban areas, and currently have programmes in 22 countries in Africa, Asia and Pacific as well as The Americas. The following are examples of what the funds raised by 21st Century Leaders allowed WaterAid to buy:
• £500 paid for the materials needed for a reservoir tank to serve 600 people in Madagascar
• £1000 paid the complete costs of building a 15 metre well, including a £500 Nira handpump to benefit 500 people in Tanzania
• £1500 paid for a mason and drilling supervisor to work on 125 tubewells benefiting over 30,000 people in Uganda
In addition, in 2012 21st Century Leaders sponsored Will Moore, the foundation’s VIP & Artist Relations Advisor & his young son Harry, who climbed Mount Helvellyn in Wales for WaterAid. Our donation of $118 went towards building a well and paying for handpumps to supply two villages in Uganda with clean water.
