How have we helped?
$170,960 has been raised by 21st Century Leaders, from the sale of Whatever It Takes products.
In May 2003, 21st Century Leaders Founder & Director Charlotte di Vita MBE, was chosen as a Goodwill Ambassador to Nelson Mandela Childrens' Fund.
Initially 21st Century Leaders donated funds to the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund to support the work of Bethesda House, a centre for HIV positive children run by the Salvation Army, and its outreach project in the community of Soweto (see details below).
Thereafter the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund asked 21st Century to donate funds, on a non restrictive basis, to allow the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund to determine where funds are most needed. The Trustees of 21st Century Leaders agreed this due to the special relationship between 21st Century Leaders Foundation and the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund going forward.
In 2011 the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund asked that funds raised by Whatever It Takes royalties be used to fund the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Fund and we have been funding this programme ever since.
About The Nelson Mandela Children's Fund
The Nelson Mandela Children's Fund strives to change the way society treats its children and youth.
In the pursuit of its vision, and in order to ensure that the legacy of its founder, Nelson Mandela, is secured in perpetuity, the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund aims to build a rights-based movement that gives voice and dignity to the African child.
Bethesda House is home to 36 children who are HIV positive, some of whom have been abandoned by their mothers and others whose parents are too ill to take care of them. There is a strong educational element and a successful income-generating aspect to this project, including beading, sewing & baking.

Nelson Mandela’s Children’s Fund received matching funds from The Big Give in both 2011 & 2012 against 21st Century Leaders' own donations in both years raising a further $23,910. Funds have been allocated to The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital.
About The Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital
Their Vision
A state-of-the art specialist paediatric academic and tertiary referral hospital providing child-centered best quality medical services to the children of Southern Africa, irrespective of their social and economic status, which was opened in Johannesburg in 2017.
Health Care for Children in Africa
Initially, there were only three dedicated children's hospitals in Africa - one in Egypt, one in Kenya and one in Cape Town, South Africa, serving a population 741 million. This, in comparison with 19 children's hospitals in Australia, 20 in Germany and 23 in Canada.
The Red Cross Children's Hospital in Cape Town tends to mainly serve the children of the Western Cape and surrounding regions whilst the bulk of the child population resides in the Eastern Cape, Kwazulu Natal and Gauteng provinces. All levels of paediatric care in Southern Africa are overwhelmed by the demand for services.
The increase in government spending of primary and secondary health care has, in some cases, resulted in a reduction in budgetary allocations for tertiary and quaternary care. This increase in spending at primary level has seen an increase in the number of referrals up to secondary and tertiary levels resulting in long waiting periods at times.
Child Health as a Human Right
Children have a right to be cared for and receive medical treatment. This treatment should be in an environment that is safe and caring. The statistics in Africa, however, tell a sad tale with 394 million children in Sub-Saharan Africa living in poverty, the mortality rate in the same region is currently 157 per 1000 live births. In the words of Mr. Nelson Mandela "a specialist dedicated children's hospital will be a credible demonstration of the commitment of African leaders to place the rights of children at the forefront - nothing less would be enough."
